Elance: Are you a Project Manager?

Privately Owned Social Networks

A site that is easy for you to manipulate will stay Fresh, with you and your guests:

Choose a site style that is easy for you to manipulate so  you can cater to your audience faster and more easily. There are several free to inexpensive types of sites that you can choose from. It depends on what your level of online programming is.

Below, you will find a few simple options. They are ranked in level lowest detail to highest.

If the site is too complicated or tedious,

                                                         it becomes work.

How strong is your level of knowledge of HTML and web design? Be realistic, it will save you a lot of time and agony. You do not need to know either to operate a great site. We like free stuff so that's where we focus our research.

For a beginner we suggest a simple blog.

For an intermediate programmer we like Plug and Play - Free Site. (Don't stress the web address, I'll go into web URL shorteners, shortly.)

For a more advanced user, a Privately Hosted site would be the way to go.

Going beyond that, there are Privately Owned Social Networks which is totally new technology, which means that there is a lot or room for stardom and HUGE income potential with paid memberships.

Blog

Cost: $0.00

Details: Google Blogger is an incredibly easy blog developer. It allows the user to remotely add information to their site (through e-mail) and add dynamic HTML (such as Amazon items) and income producing Google Adsense.

Another good thing about Blogs is that there is no presumption of fact. Readers are comfortable with the idea that the article they are reading comes from a regular person simply describing their experience.

Whether you decide to focus on one item or create your own version of Consumer Reports, you can do it here. The only limit is your imagination. Include charts, graphs, location maps (Google maps are embeddable, (able to be inserted) into any HTML in almost any size). There is even built in Search and Archive functions to make it easier for users to find specific information.

Required HTML knowledge: Very Little. Google Blogger comes with a slew of pre-built features that are pretty much drag and drop (actually, click-drag-drop). If you would like to add something different that is not in their ever growing selection then you will need to know where to get the code and where to place it.

Pros: Super easy to use. Literally up and running in a few seconds. Easy to maintain and add to.

Cons: Besides the color scheme, most of the sites look and feel alike. You will have to add great content to keep the attention of your visitors.

Important Sites: There are dozens of Blog sites to choose from. We like Google Blogger because it is the easiest. Please feel free to check out some of the others like WordPress and Blogsvertise. These should get you started. There are thousands more, but remember that right now, your focus is on your research and getting started.

 Free Plug and Play Sites

Details: These sites are usually very easy to operate. The come with dozens of templates or you can build your own from scratch. There are a lot of providers to choose from so we suggest that you take your time when choosing. Though many of these sites are free that does not mean that you want to choose just any one.

Be aware of the “paralysis of analysis”. If you feel that you are overwhelmed and cannot choose, print a screenshot of your favorite 3-4 and run it by a buddy, the local tech store geek, or one of your friends' kids. They should have a good understanding of its capabilities and be able to pull you into a decision. The most important thing is to actually get started.

Cost: Ranges from $0 - $5 monthly subscription. Of course while there are more expensive options I wouldn’t spend more than $5 a month. Save your cash for the marketing.

Required HTML knowledge: A little more complex. You at least have to know about domain names, and how to locate the right spot to drop your special code in for all your do-hickeys.

Pros: Most of these sites are Drag and Drop and allow a lot more flexibility in the design aspect :)  Play for days with the layout and change it until it fits. In most cases you can fill your site with text and just change the template and everything goes with it.

Cons: You can easily lose an entire weekend (...or week or month, for that matter) choosing a great site. Take a look at what some of your competitors are doing. They already went through what you are going through now – skip a step and see what their R&D team has come up with for them and steal it.

Important Sites: Yahoo Free Site, Google Free Site, FreeWebs, Homestead

Custom Built Sites

Details: These sites require a little more work on the creator's part, however, if done well can be the face of your new online empire. They require a few key elements get off the ground; a host (GoDaddy), a domain name (again, GoDaddy) and a website creator (there are too many to list, we like Microsoft FrontPage 2003 [Old Version] personally, but there are plenty of others - check out the list below.

Cost: Hosting $20 - $ 100 per year. There are always venues to spend money if you look hard enough but we would not recommend spending more than $20 on your first site. There just is no reason to. For those that are interested in purchasing beautiful creative Flash Animations remember, they cost money, are not searchable, and are unnecessary. If you want to add something dynamic- choose a free widget from WidgetBox.

Domain names run about $10. This is the name that people will type in to reach your website. Be creative and find a name that suits your site that no one else already has. We do not suggest spending $500 for your first domain name.

Then again, if your site is working for you then it may be worth it to move from www.moms-awsome-apple-turnover-surprise-cake-with-cream-cheese-filling.com to www.momscakes.com.

URL Shortner: A URL Shortner is a company or a website that gives you a abbreviated name on their site. Think of it as a P.O. Box for people with really long street addresses. You still get all of your mail (or in this case visitors) and have less of a chance to mistype your site address. Remember, people will not spend too much time looking for your site.

This site outlines 5 of the best sites that help shorten your site address. There are simple tutorials to show you how each one works, however, the basis is still the same; you enter your site name and they create a shorter (easier to follow) one on their domain that includes their extension. For example www.moms-awsome-apple... entered into Shorty URL's site comes out www.momscakes.shortyurl.com.

Article and Reviews:  Top 5 URL Shorteners and How They Help You

Website: $0 - $ ?00 Websites are kind of quirky. You can build your own from scratch or start with an awesome Template like the ones shown here by Template Monster, or have one built for you. How much it costs depends on how you choose to build and maintain it - and don't even get us started on man hours.

If you decide to have one built there are millions of great designers waiting for the chance and even more places to find them. A word of advice – choose a site that you can trust like E-lance or Craig's List, sites that you can reference payment if things go sour. Also choose a site that allows you to look at reviews and ratings from other customers: see what kind of feedback users of the site and customers of the service providers are giving.

Required HTML knowledge: Depends on your choice for development. Most programs available are drag and drop or copy and paste. The HTML comes in when you start adding dynamic features such as ads or videos.

Pros: Totally customizable :) the sky is the limit on what you can create.

The internet is like a movie screen. Literally anything that your mind can conceive – someone can build it for you for the right price.

Cons: Totally customizable :( the sky is the limit on what you can create.

This can be a weekend project or an all knowing all absorbing lifelong obsession. We suggest that you plan your time wisely. Narrow your choices to 3, choose, and move on.

Elance

Elance

Elance is a great site for those that have a serious vision for their site.  We would not recommend this site for beginners. It will end up costing you way too much.

On the other hand, if you do have an idea for the next great website, detail your thoughts as much as possible. Do a little research and capture some screenshots of other sites that have components of what you would like and see what you come up with.

Elance is also great for individuals that are great at managing projects. This video explains it all.

Design your own home page or link your existing homepage to the login page of the network and you're up and running.

Cons: A lot of attention and energy required to get started. Take your time and build wisely. Plan your content. Feed your site with a few dozen of your friends and do anything it takes to have people talking about it.

Costs: $29.99 a month and up with a $100  inital setup fee. There are more out there but for the same thing you can end up paying upwards of $20,000 just to get started.
